La Liga giants Barcelona have reportedly held talks to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer next summer.
Reporting from Metro, the meeting between Rudiger's agent - Sahr Senesie - with Barca Director of Football Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff was reportedly held on Wednesday (30/3/2022) evening local time at a hotel in Barcelona.
Sky Germany's report claims that Senesia spent approximately three hours discussing with Blaugrana officials. They just left the hotel when it was almost midnight.
As is well known, Rudiger will spend his contract with Chelsea at the end of the season. The Champions League champions can no longer offer a new contract, following the sanctions imposed by the British government on Roman Abramovich.
According to Metro, Chelsea actually had made an offer to extend Rudiger's stay at Stamford Bridge. However, the German player rejected Chelsea's efforts. He remained unmoved when given a deal worth nearly £200,000-a-week.
Antonio Rudiger is one of Chelsea's mainstay players. Since playing with the Blues in 2017, the former AS Roma player has transformed into a key player in Thomas Tuchel's squad.
He is considered to have an important role at the back, to successfully lead the Blues to lift the Champions League trophy last season. Rudiger's departure from Stamford Bridge will inevitably cause a big loss for Chelsea.
Thomas Tuchel had made it clear that he wanted Rudiger to remain at the Blues before the British government's ban. However, the club has so far been unable to reach a new agreement with the player.
Not only Rudiger, Chelsea also seems to have to prepare to release Andreas Christensen at the end of the season. The reason, Metro said that Barcelona had reached an agreement to bring in the Danish international player.
The Catalan giants have reportedly agreed to sign AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie. The 25-year-old player is known to be spending his contract with the Rossoneri at the end of the season.
"We have completed two signings for next season. One is a midfielder, the other is a central defender," said Barcelona president Joan Laporta regarding the progress of his club's transfer last week.
Chelsea situation
Meanwhile, Chelsea is currently in a bad situation. His boss, Roman Abramovich, was sanctioned by the British government following the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The Russian tycoon's assets were frozen because he was considered to have close ties to Vladimir Putin
