The MSP billings refer to a list of fees approved by the Medical Services Commission. Physicians can determine bills for a variety of healthcare visits by using the MSP billing codes. MSP cloud billing software with standardized fee structures can be of value for hospitals and clinics. The following blog discusses the most common visits in MSP billing.

1. Office Visits

Basic office visits are one of the most common types of visits identified in MSP billing. This can be conducted either through Telehealth or in person. The visit involves the evaluation of a patient’s medical condition through physical or medical history examination.

In-office visits are billed according to the age of the patients. This pricing list can be identified through the differential code of 0100. For instance, for ages 0-1, the cost of the in-office visit is standardized at $34.98 (fee code: 12100). On the other hand, for ages 2 - 49, the cost is $31.62 (fee code: 00100). Telemedicine visits performed with the help of video and phone also have standardized MSP billings, such as $34.79 for patients between ages 0 - 1 (fee code: T13237).

There are some general rules within BC MSP billings that should be remembered as well. For instance, family physicians can only bill the office visit once per patient regardless of how many medical conditions are discussed during the sitting. In some cases, the patient's second visit on the same day can be charged again, for instance, if the condition has intensified. However, if the patient comes to the clinic for additional information regarding their condition and doesn't require a new assessment, the office visit cannot be charged.

2. Counseling Visits

Counseling visits include discussion and assessments regarding mental and emotional conditions. These may include psychiatric diagnoses such as depression and anxiety, discussions regarding life-changing diseases like type 1 diabetes or cancer, and grief reactions such as after losing a close relative. In-person counseling visits can cost $62.09 for ages 50 - 59 (fee code: 15320). Counseling through telehealth costs $62.05 for the same age group (fee code: T13538).

3. Physical Examination

Physical examination refers to a detailed physical analysis of the patient as part of the diagnosis. These examinations are conducted in-office and need to follow certain criteria. For instance, examining a patient showing dangerous symptoms like night sweats and unexplained weight loss or a patient undergoing chronic medical conditions requiring a full examination for proper diagnosis. Healthcare practitioners cannot bill patients two years of age and older if they come for physical examination as part of their routine annual checkup. On the other hand, if an adult female patient requires a pap test, it cannot be billed separately.
