Acceleration of industrialisation and economic blooming has always been perceived as the key elements in driving a country forward. As one of the most industrialised and densely populated countries, Singapore is working hard to make public transportation a sustainable transport system. Rail operators have partnered with the government to reduce energy consumption. One such example is the Intelligent Facilities Management (IFM) launched by SMRT Trains, a leading rail operator in Singapore, to reduce its annual energy consumption at train stations by over 7,000 Megawatt hours (MWh).

SMRT has partnered with Envision Digital, a global decarbonisation software leader headquartered in Singapore to launch predictive Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that can adjust the air-conditioning system to maintain an optimal temperature of about 26 degrees Celsius using the right amount of energy.

How SMRTs intelligent facilities management initiative is saving energy at stations

The use of air-conditioning is responsible for more than half of the energy consumed in underground stations. Currently, a traditional air-conditioning control system takes more time and uses more energy to maintain the optimal temperature.

The use of AI in the air-conditioning system is part of SMRT’s initiative to use smart technologies to improve efficiency in its rail operations. 

SMRT and Envision Digital did lab testing and real-world trials at two stations with the new AI-based HVAC optimisation system and saw a 5 to 10% reduction in energy consumption.

By the end of 2023, SMRT plans to implement this at 70 of its underground stations across the North-South, East-West, Circle, and Thomson-East Coast lines. The initiative is part of SMRT’s mission to cut its carbon footprint to achieve net zero by 2050.

Commenting on the sustainability efforts, SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “As the major rail operator in Singapore, we provide the greenest and most sustainable mode of public commute. We are committed to halving our 2010 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and in the longer term, to achieve Net Zero by 2050 to support Singapore’s climate ambition.”

Seah Moon Ming further added: “Sustainability is part of our business operations, and we aim to secure a greener and more sustainable environment for future generations.”

The Intelligent Facilities Management (IFM) system of SMRT will also include:

  • On-Demand Cleaning for toilets and robot cleaners using a Hygiene Service Index
  • Integrated Operations Maintenance for the integration of fault management and maintenance between the Advanced Station Operations Management System (ASOMS) and Mobile Operations Maintenance System (MOMS)

Conclusion

Net zero transportation is the future. SMRT’s green initiatives through Intelligent Facilities Management in stations will lower energy usage and reduce the carbon footprint for a greener Singapore. With these collective green initiatives, SMRT will move closer to its vision to achieve net zero carbon equivalent by 2050.
