Path of Exile was released in 2013. This is a completely free game that is always online, and all microtransactions are almost decorative. The game has changed a lot since its release. Some examples can be given from many aspects. For example, when the Path of Exile was first released, there were only 3 stories of Acts, but now there are 10 (this should be the end of the main story). As another example, the game has "leagues" – special events. Leagues need a newly created character that lasts a long time and cannot be repeated. If I had to quickly describe the sport, I'd call it “highly inventive, yet incredibly familiar”. Let me attempt to explain what I mean. You see, there aren't any “active skills” to level up during a conventional sense – no magic spells, special hits, hexes or whatever else that your character class inherits and has tied to them. Instead, all of that stuff is tied to special “gems” (kind of like “materia” in Final Fantasy 7), that enables any class to use any active skill. Which do level up (as gems), and do have their own requirements in level and main character attributes. So you may get restricted in how far you'll upgrade your fireball throwing ability if you've got low Int, but you would possibly still be able to Buy POE Currency use it up until that level.

There's still a skill tree, a huge one, but that one moreover (also harking back to several Final Fantasy titles) is extremely freeform and that specialize in passive upgrades – upping attributes, your resistances and damage output abilities, health levels and such.
