5 Rules for Wearing a Watch for an Interview

First impressions make all the difference! If you are going for a job that has high competition then you are going to want to pay attention to detail.

Depending on what industry you work in, your level of professionalism, especially in the way you dress, can make or break whether you get the job or not. Employers consistently rank professionalism above enthusiasm in surveys that ask what they are looking for in a new hire.

Rule 1: Stay conservative
Your look should match your manner. You wouldn't cluster in the interview room in a bold way that says, “I'm too good for this role”. So don't do the same with what you're wearing. Your new manager needs to like you and not see you as a potential threat, at least not immediately. So, keep the conservative character and go for a simple watch that blends in with the rest of your outfit.

Rule 2: don't be too cheeky with colors
Choose a watch that goes well with your costume or outfit. We have a handy color guide in this post: what watch to wear with a costume, which might come in handy. You will notice that gold does not feature very strongly on this color chart, and we recommend that you stick to this principle for an interview even if you dress casually. Gold is a hard color that is difficult to remove. Stick with black on black or black on silver watches if possible.

Rule 3: But, make sure you have confidence in yourself!
That being said, you still want to dress confidently. It is important not to blend in so far into the background that an interviewer cannot remember you. Wearing a luxury brand like an Omega or Audemars Piguet watch can help you make a good impression.

Rule 4: Avoid low-quality brands and fakes

Better not to have a watch than to go into an interview with a Casio or shoddy brand like the one pictured here. Unless your entire outfit is based on vintage style. Fake watches and counterfeits are also not recommended, you might think your Rolex looks like the real deal and no one can tell the difference, but like this guide to spotting a fake Rolex watch, it is actually not as difficult as you might imagine it to say a fake from an original. It doesn't leave a good impression when your employer knows you're happy to break the law and buy a fake!

Rule 5: Details matter!
Our top styling tip is this. Match the color and style of your watch to your shoes and bag. It gives a really linked look that comes across as super professional. The saying goes, we do one thing how we do them all. That is to say. if you pay attention to the details of how you are dressed, chances are you pay attention to the details of other things as well. Employers want to see someone professional, whom they can happily put in front of a client or in front of a team to pitch ideas. Details matter!
